Medrean City Transit Authority, also known as MCTA, is the operator of mass transit within the City of Medrean City and some of its surrounding suburbs. The MCTA is a municipal corporation that started operations on April 25th, 1951 upon the purchase and combination of the transportation assets of the Medrean City Rapid Transit Company and the Medrean Surface Lines streetcar system. Today, the MCTA is one of the three service boards financially supported by the Psylone Transportation Authority.

History

Several other public transport companies existed prior to the creation of the Medrean City Transit Authority. From 1861 to 1886, the Medrean City Rapid Transit Company operated a small network of horse-drawn streetcars. Then in 1886, the company changed its name to Medrean Street Railway Company. Although they were put into service in 1905, buses only began to be widely used starting in 1925, with the creation of several regular lines. Then in 1937, the first trolleybuses were used. In 1939, the company had 224 buses and 7 trolleybuses, serving about 100 million passengers per year. As the subway was inaugurated in 1946, the Medrean City Rapid Transit Company became the Medrean City Transit Authority in April 1951.

Operation

The Medrean City Transit Authority provides service to Medrean City and 20 surrounding suburbs. The MCTA provided a total of 530.5 million rides in 2013. MCTA operates 24 hours each day and on an average weekday provides 1.7 million rides on buses and subways. It has approximately 1000 buses that operate over 90 routes traveling along 2,230 route miles (3,658 km). Buses provide about one million passenger trips a day and serve more than 9,000 posted bus stops. The Medrean City Transit Authority's 6 subway lines operate over six routes and 222 miles (357 km) of track. Its trains provide about 750,000 customer trips each weekday and serve 113 stations in Medrean City.

Safety and Security

The Medrean City Transit Authority rail cars have generally been secure and safe but in addition to general security issues on the MCTA, there were calls to improve MCTA's emergency response and communications procedures. MCTA has also installed a security camera network, and a system to send real time images from cameras in buses directly to emergency responders. MCTA has also been actively prosecuting vandals, announcing on several occasions that felony convictions were obtained against persons who spray painted authority vehicles.

The Medrean City's Subwayis the rapid transit system serving the city and some of its surrounding suburbs. It is also operated by the Medrean City Transit Authority (MCTA). It is one of the busiest subway transit system in Simland. Medrean City's Subway provides 24-hour service on some portions of its network. The oldest sections of the subway started operations in 1902.

The Medrean City's Subway consists of six rapid transit lines laid out in a spoke-hub distribution paradigm mainly focusing transit towards the Downtown. On average 396,427 people ride the subway each weekday. Annual ridership for 2012 was 131.15 million.

As of November 2013, the system has 113 stations spread over six lines operating on 224.1 miles (360.7 km) of track. The majority of subway stations are named for the streets or intersections on which they are located, others are named for neighborhoods, suburbs, destinations, or a combination of these.

Bus services

The Medrean City Transit Authority bus service operates well over 200 bus routes serving a number of different markets. These routes serve an average of 1,063,433 daily passengers each weekday.

Local network routes, numbered 10-299, generally operate seven days per week, from 5:00 am to 1:00 am (Monday to Friday) and usually with a shorter span of service on weekends and holidays. Within this classification, some routes operate only at peak hours Monday through Friday, and sometimes only in peak directions. Others, numbered above 251, are specifically designed to serve the needs of senior citizens.

All-night network routes, with route numbers from 300-399, generally operate from 1:00 am to 5:00 am, seven days per week with some only operating early on Saturday and Sunday ("late" on Friday and Saturday).

Express Network routes, numbered 400-499, are limited-stop routes. Some routes are classified as Metrobus, and Trainbus and are geared to deliver peak-hour commuters to specific Metro and commuter train stations.

On November, 2013, the MCTA introduced the 10 Minutes Max network. This "network", overlaid on both the local and express networks described above, schedules buses at a maximum headway of 10 minutes, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., Monday to Friday, on the 31 of the MCTA's busiest bus routes. A few routes support that maximum headway only in the customary peak direction mornings and afternoons.

Water Taxi

Shoreline Sightseeing offers water taxi service along the Medrean River with stops at the University, the Millenium Park, Colonius Avenue, and Kendal Wharf. Shoreline Sightseeing also offers architecture cruises on the Omega Lake. Wendella Boats operates the Medrean City Water Taxi which offers scheduled service along the Medrean River with stops at Colonius Avenue and Millenium Park.

Bicycling

M-Cycling, a Bicycle sharing system, ipened in2013 with 2,000 bikes at 200 stations throughout Medrean City. Bicycles are permitted on MCTA buses during all operating hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.(during rush hour) On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, bicycles are allowed on trains all day.
